The American Lung Association of Tennessee® is fighting to improve the air we breathe, both outdoors and indoors.
Outdoor air programs: We are powerful advocates for cleaner air:
- We annually publish the State of the Air Report, which grades cities and counties for their air quality. Tennessee ranks among the top most ozone air polluted states in the country.
- We work with allies to clean up sources of air pollution, especially the dirty coal-fired power plants operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, as well as cars, trucks and other industrial sources.
- We serve on boards and task forces to monitor and advocate for compliance with clean air laws.
- We were instrumental in getting public forecasting of bad air quality days. By clicking on the EPA web site, AIRNOW-Forecast Map, you can find out what the air quality will be like in your city each day.
Indoor air programs: Did you know you spend 90% of your time indoors?
- We provide free information on indoor air pollution, which includes specific ways you can identify and remove problems in your home.
- We sell kits to measure the levels of radon in your home. Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that is invisible, odorless and yet is the second leading cause of lung cancer. We have kits that can provide a good quick assessment of the radon levels in your home for $9.00, plus $2.00 S/H charges. We have kits that can provide an even more accurate reading over a longer period (3 months to 1 year) for $15.00, plus $2.00 S/H charges. Contact us for more information on ordering kits.
- We work with schools to improve the air children, teachers and others breathe in their buildings by helping them to implement the EPA Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools programs.
